Ferry, ADO, or Colectivo Here's How to Explore Beyond Playa Without Renting a Car
One of the biggest advantages of staying in Playa del Carmen is that you don't necessarily need a rental car to explore beyond the city.
Its location and transportation connections make several day trips from Playa del Carmen without a car surprisingly easy, using ferries, ADO buses, and colectivos to reach some of the Riviera Maya's most popular destinations.
But not every destination is equally convenient.
The key is knowing which transportation option works best—and, most importantly, figuring out how you're getting back before you leave.
Cozumel | The Easiest Ferry Day Trip

There may not be an easier escape from Playa del Carmen.
Ferries to Cozumel depart from the maritime terminal next to Parque Los Fundadores, meaning that if you're staying Downtown, you may even be able to start your day trip on foot.
Once you arrive in San Miguel de Cozumel, explore part of Downtown on foot and use taxis to reach beaches, beach clubs, or snorkeling spots farther away.
When you're ready to return, simply take the ferry back to Playa del Carmen.

Tip: check return schedules before starting your day and avoid relying on the last ferry available.
Puerto Morelos | Easy by Colectivo
For something smaller and more relaxed, Puerto Morelos is another destination you can reach without driving.
Colectivos traveling along the federal highway provide an affordable way to get close to Puerto Morelos, although you'll usually need to arrange the final stretch toward the coastal area separately.
Once you're by the water, Downtown Puerto Morelos is compact and easy to explore on foot.
Spend a few hours around the main square, local shops, restaurants, and pier before making your way back to Playa.
Transportation: colectivo + local transportation.

Akumal | Possible with a Little More Planning
Akumal can also be reached using colectivos traveling south from Playa del Carmen.
The main difference is that public transportation drops you along the federal highway rather than directly on the beach, so you'll need to walk or arrange transportation for the remaining distance.
If your goal is to visit the bay and spend most of the day in the same area, it's still a practical option.
Just leave enough time and know where you'll catch your colectivo back to Playa.

Tulum | Better by ADO
For a Tulum day trip, an ADO bus can be one of the more comfortable options when you're traveling without a car.
You can leave Playa del Carmen and reach Tulum without worrying about driving, parking, or renting a vehicle.
The important thing to remember is that Tulum is spread out. Downtown, the archaeological zone, and the beach area are not all in the same place.
Instead of trying to see everything in a few hours, choose one area as the focus of your day and build the itinerary around it.

Valladolid | For Travelers Who Don't Mind a Longer Ride
It's also possible to plan a Valladolid day trip from Playa del Carmen by bus.
Unlike Akumal or Puerto Morelos, transportation will take up a significant part of the day, so leaving early makes a big difference.
The advantage is that once you reach Valladolid, much of the experience can happen on foot. Explore the historic center, walk along Calzada de los Frailes, try Yucatecan food, and discover the city without needing a car.

Which Destinations Aren't as Practical Without a Car?
This is where it helps to be realistic.
Trying to combine several remote cenotes, visit Cobá and additional attractions in the same day, or build a route with multiple stops along secondary roads can become complicated when you're relying entirely on public transportation.
That doesn't mean it's impossible.
It simply means your vacation can quickly turn into a series of connections, waits, and taxi rides.
For more isolated attractions, booking transportation, joining a tour, or choosing just one experience for the day may make much more sense.

Start with the destination.
Cozumel: ferry.
Puerto Morelos and Akumal: colectivo.
Tulum: ADO is a convenient option.
Valladolid: bus and an early start.
And before leaving, do one simple thing: check how you're getting back.
Schedules and departure points can change, so confirm current transportation options on the day of your trip and avoid depending on the final service of the evening.
You Don't Need a Car to Explore Beyond Playa
One of the best things about using Playa del Carmen as your base is how many places you can experience without driving.
You can have breakfast in Playa, board a ferry to an island, take a colectivo toward another Caribbean town, or hop on a bus and completely change the scenery.
You don't need to do them all.
Pick one, understand how to get there, and leave enough time to return without stress.
