Best Cenotes Near Playa del Carmen — Day Trip Guide 2026

Playa del Carmen is positioned within easy reach of several distinct cenote zones — from the jungle road cenotes north toward Puerto Morelos to the larger cave systems south toward Tulum. Here are the best options accessible as day trips from Playa.

Ruta de los Cenotes (Puerto Morelos road)

The most accessible cenote cluster from Playa del Carmen. Located 15–20 km north via a jungle road accessed from Highway 307 at Puerto Morelos (15 km north of Playa). The route contains 7 cenotes of varying type and accessibility. The highlights:

Verde Lucero: Open cenote with brilliant turquoise-green water. Shallow enough to see the bottom clearly. Rope swings installed. Entry: $150 MXN. Best light: midday.

Siete Bocas: Semi-open cenote with multiple entry holes. The most dramatic light effects in the cluster — shafts of sunlight through separate openings. Entry: $100 MXN. Bring a flashlight for the cave section.

La Noria: Smaller, less visited open cenote at the quieter end of the route. Entry: $80 MXN. Good for swimming without the rope swing crowds of Verde Lucero.

Getting to the Ruta de los Cenotes: Rental car is most practical (15 min from Playa). Alternatively, colectivo to Puerto Morelos then taxi to the cenote road entrance.

Aktun Chen (near Akumal)

30 km south of Playa del Carmen, Aktun Chen is a combined cave system and open cenote — one of the better-organized cenote attractions in the region. The cave tour (45 minutes, guided) goes through impressive stalactite formations. The open cenote adjacent to the cave has excellent swimming. Entry: $25 USD including cave tour and cenote access. Open 9am–5pm. Easily combined with an Akumal sea turtle visit (15 km further north) for a full southern day trip.

Dos Ojos (near Tulum)

45–50 km south of Playa del Carmen — the most impressive cave cenote system accessible on a day trip. The snorkel tour through the cave sections (with headlamps) reveals crystal-clear freshwater over a sand and rock bottom, with roots hanging through from the jungle above. Entry with snorkel tour: $500–600 MXN. Best for confident swimmers — the cave sections require comfort in enclosed, dark spaces.

Getting there independently

For the northern cenotes (Ruta de los Cenotes), rental car is strongly recommended. For the southern cenotes (Aktun Chen, Dos Ojos), the ADO bus toward Tulum stops near both sites — ask for the Akumal exit (for Aktun Chen) or Dos Ojos. Return buses from the highway back to Playa run until approximately 7pm.
