Cozumel from Playa del Carmen — The Perfect Day Trip Guide 2026

Cozumel from Playa del Carmen is the most efficient day trip in the Riviera Maya — 20 minutes by ferry, world-class reef snorkeling and diving, a pleasant colonial town, and a completely different character from the mainland. If you're based in Playa del Carmen and can only do one day trip, make it this one.

The ferry — logistics and timing

The main ferry dock in Playa del Carmen is at the waterfront near Parque Fundadores. Multiple companies operate: Ultramar, Barcos Caribe, and Mexico Waterjets. Departures approximately every 30 minutes from 6am to 10pm. Cost: $240–280 MXN one way. Journey time: 20–25 minutes. The best morning departure for a day trip is 7–8am — this gets you to Cozumel in time for morning reef conditions before the daily wind picks up.

The return schedule mirrors the outbound. Last ferry back to Playa: approximately 10pm. Missing this ferry means staying the night — not a disaster (the island has excellent accommodation) but worth planning around.

The first two hours — reef before it gets busy

Cozumel's western coast has flat, clear water in the morning. By 11am the daily easterly wind arrives and the water surface gets choppy. The best snorkeling and diving conditions are 8–11am. From the San Miguel ferry dock, a 10-minute taxi ($5–8 USD) reaches Chankanaab Park — the most accessible reef from shore. Alternatively, book a morning snorkel tour from Playa in advance and go directly from the ferry dock to the waiting boat.

The world-class Palancar and Columbia reefs are reached by a 20-minute boat ride from the dock. Half-day snorkel tours covering these reefs: $40–65 USD per person including equipment. Two-tank dive tours: $80–120 USD.

San Miguel town — midday

The main town of Cozumel (San Miguel) has a pleasant malecón (waterfront promenade) and a walkable commercial center. The town market (Mercado Municipal) is worth 20 minutes for local food — fish tacos and ceviche at $25–40 MXN per piece. The best sit-down lunch options: La Habichuela (traditional Mexican, $150–300 MXN per person) and El Moro (local seafood institution, $180–350 MXN).

The eastern coast — afternoon

Cozumel's eastern coast is the island's wild side — Caribbean waves, no development, and several beach restaurants that look out at open ocean. A rental scooter ($30–40 USD) or Jeep ($60–80 USD) from San Miguel makes the circuit possible in a half-day. The eastern coast is not swimmable in most conditions (too rough) but the scenery — limestone cliffs, pelicans, deserted beaches — is unlike anything on the western shore.

Budget

Ferry round trip: $480–560 MXN. Snorkel tour: $40–65 USD. Lunch: $150–350 MXN per person. Scooter rental: $30–40 USD. A full Cozumel day independently: $80–120 USD total — significantly less than the organized tours sold from Playa del Carmen hotels, which package the same elements for $150–200 USD per person.
