Isla Mujeres is more commonly visited from Cancún (20 minutes by direct ferry) than from Playa del Carmen (45 minutes each way on the ADO bus to Cancún, then ferry). That said, it's fully doable as a Playa day trip — the island is worth a longer journey — and the logistics are straightforward if you plan the timing correctly.
Getting from Playa to Isla Mujeres
The most practical route: ADO bus from Playa del Carmen to Cancún (45 minutes, $100–140 MXN), then the R-1 bus or taxi to the Playa Tortugas ferry dock (km 6.5 in the Hotel Zone), then ferry to Isla Mujeres (15–20 minutes, $240 MXN one-way). Total one-way journey: approximately 1.5–2 hours. An earlier departure from Playa (7am ADO) gets you on the island by 9:30–10am. The last ferry back from the island is at 11:30pm — allowing a long day before the return.
Alternative: Some private tour operators in Playa del Carmen offer direct boat trips to Isla Mujeres (bypassing the Cancún ferry entirely) — typically more expensive but significantly faster. Ask at the Playa waterfront for current operators and pricing.
What makes Isla Mujeres worth the extra travel
Playa Norte — consistently ranked one of the best beaches in Mexico. Calm, shallow, crystal-clear water in a sheltered bay. The snorkeling at Manchones Reef south of the island has better coral coverage than anything accessible from Playa del Carmen itself. The island's scale (7 km long) makes it possible to see everything in a single day with a golf cart rental ($400–600 MXN for 4 hours).
The town (El Pueblo) has genuine small-town character that neither Cancún nor Playa del Carmen offers. The main square, the fish market, the tiendas — all give a picture of what Caribbean coast life looked like before mass tourism infrastructure. The seafood restaurants in town are excellent at local prices (ceviche and fish tacos at $60–120 MXN per person).
The case for doing it from Cancún instead
If you're based in Playa del Carmen and only have one day for Isla Mujeres, the island is worth the extra transport time. But if Cancún is also on the itinerary, coordinate the Isla Mujeres day to happen while you're in Cancún — the 30-minute round trip from the Hotel Zone versus the 3-hour round trip from Playa changes the calculus significantly.
What to do on Isla Mujeres
Rent a golf cart from the ferry dock immediately. Drive to Playa Norte (10 minutes), swim and relax until noon. Return to town for lunch at Mercadito de la Isla ($60–120 MXN per person). Drive the eastern coast of the island to Punta Sur (the cliff lighthouse). Snorkel tour at Manchones Reef from the dock ($250–350 MXN, 2–3 hours). Return ferry by 6–7pm for the ADO back to Playa.
