Best Restaurants in Playa del Carmen 2026 — The Honest Guide

Playa del Carmen has the most diverse and interesting restaurant scene on the Riviera Maya — more variety than Cancún's resort strip, more accessible prices than Tulum's boutique jungle dining. The challenge is finding the good ones among the hundreds of mediocre tourist-trap restaurants on 5th Avenue.

The best restaurants in Playa del Carmen by category

Mexican regional cuisine

La Vagabunda (5th Ave near Calle 34): The most serious Mexican regional restaurant in Playa. The menu changes seasonally and draws from Oaxacan, Yucatecan, and Veracruz traditions. Mole negro takes 3 days to make. The mezcal list is the best in the city. $200–400 MXN per person. Reservations recommended.

Carboncitos (5th Ave and Calle 4): Classic Mexican comfort food executed reliably well — the best chile relleno in Playa, solid enchiladas, and an excellent breakfast service. $120–220 MXN per person. No reservations needed but arrive before 9pm.

Seafood

La Pescadería (Av. 30 near Calle 14): The best seafood restaurant in Playa del Carmen and it's not close. The ceviche is made from that morning's market purchase. The aguachile negro (prawn in black chili sauce) is one of the best dishes in the Riviera Maya. $250–450 MXN per person. Opens at noon, usually sold out of the best items by 5pm.

Marisquería El Pirata (Av. 20, near Calle 10): The local-favorite seafood spot. Shrimp cocktails, ceviche tostadas, whole fried fish. $150–300 MXN per person. No English menu. Open lunch only.

Tacos and street food elevated

El Fogón (Av. 30 near Calle 10): The al pastor standard for all of Playa. $20–30 MXN per taco. The cochinita pibil available Sunday mornings only. Open until 3am.

Taquería Los Aguachiles (Av. 25 near Calle 8): Aguachile as a taco filling — an innovation that works better than it sounds. $35–55 MXN per taco. Small operation, often sells out.

International with Mexican identity

Babe's Noodles and Bar (5th Ave near Calle 10): Swedish-Mexican fusion that shouldn't work and does. Family-run since the early 2000s. The pad thai-style noodles with local chiles are the menu anchor. $150–280 MXN per person.

La Cueva del Chango (Calle 38 off 5th Ave): Organic Mexican in a jungle garden — the most atmospheric restaurant in Playa. Breakfast and lunch only. Arrive at opening (8am) for the best experience. $200–350 MXN per person.
