Playa del Carmen's bar scene is the most varied on the Riviera Maya — better cocktail programs than Cancún, more accessible prices than Tulum, and a local bar culture that exists alongside the tourist infrastructure rather than being replaced by it.
Best cocktail bars
El Alquimista (Calle 38 off 5th Ave): The best cocktail program in Playa del Carmen. The bar team uses local ingredients — hibiscus, tamarind, chili-infused syrups, fresh tropical fruit — with quality mezcal and tequila as base spirits. Each cocktail has a narrative on the menu. $150–280 MXN per drink. Opens at 6pm.
Axiote (Av. 10 near Calle 12): Mexican-inspired cocktails in a more minimal setting than El Alquimista. The chile margaritas here are the best in the city. $120–220 MXN per drink. Rooftop seating available. Gets crowded after 10pm on weekends.
Best mezcal bars
La Mezcalería (5th Ave near Calle 12): See the full mezcal guide — this is the reference point for the city's mezcal scene. $80–300 MXN per shot. Best visited at 8–10pm before it reaches full capacity.
Selva (Av. 20 near Calle 10): Smaller, quieter, and more focused on rare producers. $100–400 MXN per shot. Better for serious mezcal exploration than for a social evening.
Best rooftop bars
La Terraza (5th Ave near Calle 26): The most consistent rooftop view in the city center — 360-degree sight lines over Playa del Carmen with the Caribbean visible on clear evenings. The drinks are adequate rather than exceptional; the view justifies the visit. $120–200 MXN per drink.
Zenzi Beach Bar (beachfront): The most popular rooftop-adjacent beach bar. Good for an early evening drink as the sunset light comes in. $150–250 MXN per drink. Gets genuinely busy after 8pm.
Best local bars
El Pelícano (Av. 20 near Calle 8): The local institution bar of Playa del Carmen. No tourist markup, live ranchera music on weekends, cold beer at $30–40 MXN, mezcal at $50–80 MXN. Opens at noon and runs until whatever time the last customer leaves. The antithesis of the tourist bar economy.
Roots (near Av. 30): Live reggae and ska, small space, local crowd, no dress code, beer from $40 MXN. The bar that proves Playa has a functioning local nightlife culture independent of the tourist strip.
