Live Music in Playa del Carmen — Where to Find It in 2026

Playa del Carmen's live music scene is less prominent than its DJ and club culture but it exists and it's worth seeking out. The city has a genuine community of musicians — Mexican regional, jazz, funk, and acoustic — who perform regularly in venues that aren't exclusively tourist-focused.

Traditional Mexican music

Mariachi and traditional Mexican music in Playa del Carmen occurs in two contexts: the tourist-facing performances at restaurants on 5th Avenue (typically hired for the dinner service) and the community performances that happen organically around Parque Fundadores and local neighborhood events. The second category is the more interesting one — unscripted, often impromptu, and free. Weekend evenings at Parque Fundadores between 7 and 10pm have the highest probability of catching traditional music performances.

Jazz and acoustic

Dirty Martini (5th Ave area): The most consistent jazz programming in Playa del Carmen. Jazz and acoustic acts 3–4 nights per week, typically from 9pm. No cover on jazz nights — drink minimum applies (usually 1 drink per hour of the set). The room is small and the talent is local-to-regional — not international acts, but genuine musicians playing for the music rather than the tourist circuit.

Casa Jaguar (near Calle 38): Larger venue with occasional live music programming alongside its restaurant and bar operation. More sporadic than Dirty Martini — check Instagram for current schedule. When it has live acts, the courtyard setting is the best in the city for it.

Electronic live sets

The distinction between "live electronic music" and "DJ set" matters to some and not to others — in Playa's context, the venues that host live electronic acts (hardware synthesizers, live production) are Coco Maya on special event nights and occasionally the beach club venues during festival periods (Día de Muertos weekend, New Year). These events are announced well in advance and sell out — check venue social media several weeks ahead if this is a priority.

Local band venues

The bars on Av. 30 between Calle 8 and Calle 20 host local bands on weekend nights — typically cumbia, norteño, or rock in Spanish. Roots (near Av. 30) runs regular reggae and ska acts. El Pelícano has ranchera music on weekend afternoons. These are local cultural events rather than tourist attractions — no production, sometimes no PA system, but authenticity that can't be manufactured.

Finding the schedule

Playa del Carmen does not have a centralized music event calendar. The most reliable method for finding current live music is Instagram — search the venue names above and check their stories for the current week's programming. Local Facebook groups ("Playa del Carmen Expats" and "Things to Do in Playa del Carmen") also track music events consistently. Asking the staff at La Mezcalería or El Alquimista what's happening locally is also reliable — the bar community knows the music community.
