Playa del Carmen's taco scene is better than its reputation suggests. While 5th Avenue's tourist restaurants serve generic versions of everything, the taco economy operating on the streets behind it is serious. Here's where to find it.
Al pastor — the standard
El Fogón (Av. 30 near Calle 10): The benchmark. The trompo (rotating spit) here has been running since before most of Playa's tourist infrastructure existed. The pork is marinated overnight, the pineapple is cut fresh from the top of the spit, and the tortillas are made hourly. $20–30 MXN per taco. Get there between 7–9pm before the post-nightlife crowd arrives. Open until 3am.
Tacos El Primo (Av. 15 near Calle 12): The second-best al pastor in Playa. Smaller operation, faster service, slightly cheaper ($18–25 MXN). Good for a quick lunch when El Fogón has a line.
Cochinita pibil
Cochinita is weekend food in Playa del Carmen — most of the best versions are Saturday and Sunday only. The Mercado Municipal has the most consistent daily version ($20–25 MXN per taco). El Fogón offers cochinita on Sunday mornings only. La Parrilla on 5th Avenue does a serviceable version every day ($35–45 MXN) but you're paying for the location.
Fish tacos
Marisquería El Pirata (Av. 20 near Calle 10): The best fish taco in Playa del Carmen — fresh fish from the morning market, battered and fried to order, in a handmade tortilla with pickled cabbage and chipotle crema. $40–55 MXN per taco. Lunch only.
Los Aguachiles (Av. 25 near Calle 8): Fish tacos as a side to the specialty aguachile. $35–50 MXN. Better quality fish than most competitors because the whole business is built around seafood freshness.
Birria
Birria (slow-cooked beef or goat in chile broth, served as tacos with consommé for dipping) has become Playa del Carmen's most fashionable taco format in 2024–2026. Birria Campeona (Av. 20 near Calle 20) is the most well-reviewed. $30–45 MXN per taco. The consommé is the key — ask for extra. Open evenings only.
The taco tour route
For a dedicated taco evening: start at Los Aguachiles for the seafood version (6pm), walk to El Fogón for al pastor (7pm), finish at Birria Campeona for the beef version (9pm). Total cost: $150–250 MXN per person for 5–6 tacos and drinks. This is a legitimate food evening that costs a third of a meal at a mid-range 5th Avenue restaurant.
